Bruxism and Your Smile

Posted .

Do you grind your teeth loudly or snore while you sleep? If so, you might have bruxism. Bruxism is a disorder in which you tightly grind your teeth while you sleep. It can cause many problems. Unfortunately, many of us aren’t aware of the grinding because we are asleep when it happens! This can be frustrating and can make bruxism difficult to diagnose. However, the symptoms you display when you wake up could also be an indicator of bruxism, and can serve as a good starting point for diagnosis.

Damage to the inside of your cheeks, and teeth beginning to look flat and dull are indicators of bruxism. Damaged or cracked teeth, headaches, or damaged dental restorations may all be indicators. Be aware of these symptoms, and don’t be afraid to call and talk to our team at Jackson Dental.

A disorder related to bruxism is temporomandibular joint disorder. With TMJ disorder (sometimes referred to as TMD), you may often wake up with a sore jaw. You may also have increased tooth sensitivity, or you may have trouble fully opening and closing your mouth when you wake up.

If you suspect bruxism or TMD, or need other dental assistance, be sure to set an appointment with Jackson Dental at our dentist office in Carrollton, Texas.
