Cavity Prevention and Why Dental Sealants May be the Right Solution

Posted .

The American Dental Association has determined the effectiveness of dental sealants for cavity prevention. Today’s blog will explore the reasons why getting sealants may be a great way to stave off cavities.

Dental sealants are made from a plastic material, that when applied, is hardened, and acts as a barrier to decay-producing bacteria. Typically, sealants are applied to children’s teeth, but can work for adults, as well. It is usually reserved for premolars and molars, where decay seems to penetrate the most.

Sealants are a simple, painless procedure that helps prevent decay from forming in these areas, by making it so food and plaque can’t gather in depressions and grooves on the surfaces of teeth; this prevents acids from penetrating the enamel. Dental sealants also leave bacteria with no place to grow.

The benefits of dental sealants are a decreased future cost, less time spent with your dentist, less pain and discomfort, and possibly even saving your teeth from unnecessary cavities in the future.

Process of Dental Sealants Application

Having sealants placed takes a short period, about fifteen minutes or so, and shouldn’t cause any pain. The application process includes:

– Cleaning the tooth’s surface and drying it
– Applying an acidic gel to briefly roughen the tooth surface, which helps adhere the sealant to your natural tooth
– After, the dental hygienist will rinse the gel and dry the tooth
– The sealant is then applied – a blue light solidifies it onto the tooth

Dental sealants can be affective for at least ten years and then need reapplying. We would love to hear from you, so please Contact us at Jackson Dental for more information on dental sealants in Carrollton, Texas.
